We continue our new feature looking at the members of the Scunthorpe Referee’s Association and their career as a match official.
The latest featured Scunthorpe Referee’s Association member is Shemakay Own, who only took up the whistle just over three years ago in January 2017 after passing his course in December 2016.
Still only 17-years-old, Shemakay attained his first promotion in 2019-20, being awarded his Level 6 after a strong campaign on open age football after negotiating his mid-teenage years in the Jack Kalson League before adapting to the men’s game when he turned 16.
With his maiden promotion to the next level achieved at such a young age, he spoke inspirationally about his refereeing targets: “I think its good to have targets but better to keep them quiet.
“Personally, it is more beneficial to focus on the here and now, trying to be better than you were before. If you can do that then the sky is your limit and you can exceed your targets.”
See below his full interview, which has been published on the public Scunthorpe Referee’s Association Facebook page.
